At 56, I had stopped expecting clothes to be made for a woman my age.

There's a feeling I never had words for until recently. You're in a shop and you find something lovely. For years I'd made a kind of peace with being an afterthought in fashion. Too tight, too short, too fussy, too beige — never just right. Until my sister-in-law kept turning up looking so effortlessly herself. The same few pieces, worn again and again, every one of them fitting like it was chosen for her.

So I finally asked.
